Ninemsn launches into ads for mobile phones

NINEMSN officially launched its foray into the mobile advertising arena yesterday, backed by Citibank and expectations for up to 2 million regular users of its new mobile content services within two years.

Ninemsn's advertiser-funded project, called "mobilise", is outside the content services offered by the major telecoms.

"Snackable" content such as Ralph and Cleo are part of the program, along with local information services like film schedules, bars and restaurants and popular ninemsn products such as messenger and hotmail.

"We have been convinced for a long time that mobile is really interesting and we think lucrative," ninemsn chief executive Tony Faure said. "The logic we are working to is in the end the business model in mobile will probably be the same as the web. The most likely conclusion is the ad-funded model will dominate."
